A lot of Thai foods have coconut milk for the main of ingredient and today I’m going to present one in a hundred dishes that have coconut for the main ingredient. Actually I got this recipe from my father-in-law and he cooks really great “Lon Dtao Jieow“.
Those who like coconut will appreciate this dish, but beware of the chili’s too! Even though this is a soup it can get quite spicy so if you don’t like too much heat you will have to adjust the number of chili’s in the recipe. Of course you can make it spicier too and when we make this we usually increase the number of chili’s to 15-20. Not recommended if you aren’t an experienced chili head!
Lon Dtao Jieow is a really easy dish to make because there are not so many ingredients and you can be done and eating within 15-20 mintues. So if you want to have a quick Thai soup, Lon Dtao Jieow is the one that I would recommend. Let’s start!
Lon Dtao Jieow Recipe (Serves 2-3)
- 1 1/2 cup coconut milk
- 100 gram minced pork or chicken
- 3 tbsp fermented soybeans
- 5-7 Fresh Thai chili peppers, sliced into short lengths
- 1/4 cup thinly sliced shallot
- 1 tbsp Thai Palm Sugar
- 2-3 tbsp tamarind juice
- 1 cup water
Place the coconut milk and water into the pot over medium heat until it boils. Add minced pork or chicken into the coconut milk and wait until it starts to boil and the pork/chicken is cooked. Season to taste with fermented soybeans, palm sugar and tamarind juice. Follow with chillies and shallot. When it returns to the boil, remove from the heat. Serve hot with rice.
The taste will be a great combination between little bit salty from the fermented soybeans, sour from the tamarind juice, sweet from the palm sugar and also spicy from chillies. It depends on what you want for your own taste and you can add more or less of each component for your own favorite taste.
I really like this recipe a lot because I like the taste and also texture from soybean in the soup. And I’m not a huge soup fan either. It also goes great with rice (surprise surprise); just put a small bit on your spoon and dip into the soup, it’s a great combination. So let me know what do you think after you try it already…

Thanks for visiting my blog. I left a comment in your blogroll post
Yes you’re so right it is quite comforting. My friends think I’m crazy because I actually like this for breakfast. I’m American and we typically don’t have soup for breakfast or anything spicy, but I figure as long as it tastes good, eat it
