Thai Spicy Mixed Fruit Salad (Tum Phonlamai Ruam)

Som Tum or Som Tam is the famous Thai dish that you should try. This dish normally combines with 4 main tastes; sour from lemon juice, hot from chili, salty from fish sauce and sweetness from palm sugar. The word ‘Som Tum’ is originally called for a spicy papaya salad. But later Som Tum is created in various styles, we can use fruits (Tum Phon-la-mai), vegetables (Tum-Paa), or even rice noodles (Tum Kanom Jin) in Som Tum. I definitely love the papaya salad. But some times here in US, it’s not easy to find nice, crispy and non-bitter green papaya. So that’s why I choose this recipe. I will show you how to make Som Tum which you can find the ingredients easily and make yummy spicy salad from general fruits  that we can have every day.
Ingredients
  • 2 ¼ cups      Freshly cut mixed fruits(pineapple, green apple, seedless grapes, red pomegranate)
  • 4          Cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1 tbsp      Dried shrimps, soaked in the water to soft
  • ¼ cup      1-inch cut Long green been (optional)
  • 3 cloves    Fresh Garlic
  • 4-5         Hot green chili peppers
  • 2  tbsp  Roasted peanuts
  • 1 ½ -2 tbsp    Brown sugar, or 1 tbsp of Palm sugar
  • 2 tbsp    Fish sauce*
  • 2 ½ tbsp   Lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp        Tamarind juice
* If you are not a fan for fish sauce or can’t resist for the smell, you can substitute by dissolve ½ tsp of salt in the tamarind juice before seasoning.

How to make
  1. In a mortar, crush chilies, garlic, shrimp, and roasted peanuts with a pastel.
  2. Add tomatoes and green been, season with sugar, fish sauce, lemon juice and tamarind juice. Mix to just combine.
  3. In a large bowl, bring the cut mixed fruits. Pour over the fruit with spicy salad dress and toss evenly or gently mix with spoon.
  4. Top with another 3 tbsp of roasted peanuts or cashew nuts.
  5. Serve with sticky rice or  fresh green salad.
I hope you enjoy with my recipe.
